The Pitfalls Of Using A Credit Repair Clinic

If your credit score is suffering, chances are you are trying to figure out ways to fix it and, in your search, you might have come across credit repair clinics that claim to be able to accomplish this, allowing you to qualify for a loan or to get a credit card. Unfortunately, in this case, what sounds too good to be true is exactly that. In fact, many of the questionable methods they use can ultimately get you into trouble.

The Illegal Tactics Of Credit Repair Clinics

Oftentimes, credit repair clinics engage in practices that are not only deceptive and fraudulent, but illegal as well. For example, some repair clinics have been caught stealing the Social Security numbers from those who have passed away or individuals under the age of 18 in order to use them as a substitute for the files of customers with bad credit. These repair clinics have also been known to advise their customers to create a new identity by applying for an IRS Employer Identification Number (EIN), which is a nine-digit number that looks very much like a Social Security number, and to apply for credit with it. This, however, is illegal.

Of course, some credit repair clinics are legitimate, but they tend to charge exorbitant fees for services that are unnecessary and will not produce the miracle results you are looking for. Even if a credit repair clinic claims to be able to remove correct negative information from your credit file, it is important to understand that this is not possible. These negative items can legally remain on your credit report for several years or more, depending on what it is and as long as it is correct. They might be able to have it removed, but if the removed information was correct, it will simply reappear in one to two months.
